What is ChessRugby?

Chessrugby is a variation on the ancient game of chess that combines all the flavour and tactics of the great sport of rugby union. The game follows the rules of chess but adds a new tactical dimension of points scoring to the mix. No longer can a player just go out to get checkmate, now he must make sure he's scored more points then his opponent before he finishes him off...

How doe's it work?

Basically the rules of chess apply as normal however the playing pieces now take the form of a rugby union team.

The pieces are as follows...
(Thanks to Crash Tackle the rugby board game for supplying the graphics)

The Pawn will represent the Forwards: Slow but dependable

The "P" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as Pawns

The Rook will represent the Wingers: Fast and direct

The "R" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as Rooks

The Knight will represent outside centres: elusive with the ability to break the line

The "K" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as Knights

The Bishops will represent the half backs: The ability to strike deep

The "B" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as Bishops

The Queen will represent the fullback: Fast, with the ability to cover the entire field

The "Q" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as a Queen

The King will represent the Ball: Checkmate your opponents ball to stop the game - but makes sure you're ahead on points first!

The "Ki" symbol is to remind you that these are to be played as a King

Scoring

The ability to score points is what makes ChessRugby unique, the player with the highest score when the game is ended (checkmate) is the winner.

Scoring is done as follows...

Players are awarded points for moving a piece over the tryline and onto a space on the oppositions side of the board. Your team is awarded the number of points allocated to that space by the number in the top left. Each time a player is placed on one of these spaces the points are awarded.

Ending the game

Once ahead on points your goal is to try and checkmate your opponents ball before he can get more points then you. As soon as either players 'Ball' is checkmate, the game is over and the player with the highest amount of points claims Chessrugby glory!
